Summer Travel on Highway 23

Summer Travel On the Highway 23 Corridor

Summer travel season is underway across the Highway 23 corridor, bringing heavier traffic, seasonal visitors, road construction, and more young drivers to communities across western and central Minnesota.

From weekend lake traffic to community festivals and summer road trips, this time of year means more vehicles sharing the road and more drivers unfamiliar with local routes and changing traffic patterns. It also means drivers should take extra care while traveling Highway 23.

The Highway 23 Coalition continues working to advance safer, more reliable travel across the corridor through infrastructure investment, long-term planning, and support for critical transportation improvements that strengthen the communities connected by Highway 23.

Construction Updates Along Highway 23

Several construction projects are underway along the Highway 23 corridor during the 2026 road construction season. Drivers should expect reduced speeds, lane shifts, temporary closures, and detours in some areas.

In the Willmar area, work continues on the Highway 71 and Highway 23 bypass improvement project. The two-year effort includes resurfacing, culvert replacements, updated guardrails, and temporary ramp closures through September. Drivers traveling through the area should plan for changing traffic patterns and possible delays.

In Clara City, safety improvements are planned at the Highway 23 and Highway 7 intersection. The project includes upgraded LED stop signs, flashing beacon systems, and lane adjustments designed to improve visibility and reduce potential conflict points for drivers.

Further west near Green Valley, bridge improvements are taking place at the Redwood River and Threemile Creek crossings, including resurfacing work and guardrail updates to improve long-term safety and reliability along the corridor.

Drivers are encouraged to check current road conditions and construction updates before traveling. The Minnesota Department of Transportation Roadwork Map provides updated information on active projects, closures, and detours statewide.

Staying Alert During Summer Travel on Highway 23

Summer travel on Highway 23 brings a noticeable increase in traffic volumes across the corridor. Along with local drivers, roads are busier with vacation travelers, seasonal visitors, farm equipment, and young drivers gaining experience behind the wheel during summer activities and jobs.

Construction zones can change quickly, especially during weekends and peak travel periods. Staying alert, slowing down in work zones, avoiding distractions, and allowing extra following distance can help improve safety for everyone on the road.

Highway 23 plays a critical role in connecting communities, businesses, agriculture, and tourism across Minnesota. As improvements continue along the corridor, drivers can support safer travel by planning ahead, staying patient, and watching carefully for changing road conditions throughout the summer season.
