Keeping the Willmar Bypass Project Moving Forward
The Highway 23 Coalition is pleased to share progress on one of our 2026 Priority Projects. A recent $3 million grant award supports the 4-Lane Extension southwest of Willmar from Highway 71 to Kandiyohi County Road 5.
This 3-mile stretch represents one of the final remaining gaps in this portion of the Highway 23 corridor. The award is an important step in keeping the Willmar Bypass project moving forward.
A Project Positioned for Completion
The four-lane bypass around Willmar has been part of the region’s long-term transportation vision since the 1960s.
While the bypass was expanded to four lanes in 2001, the section west of Highway 71 remained two lanes.
This remaining segment has been a Highway 23 Coalition Priority Project since 2023 and continues as Priority Project 1 in 2026.
The project is uniquely positioned for advancement because:
- The base infrastructure is already in place
- No additional right-of-way is required
- County Road 5 ramps were completed in 2023
With these elements complete, this extension is ready to move from preparation to construction as funding partnerships align.
Maintaining Momentum
The $3 million grant requires a local match and allows for a five-year planning window. The Coalition is committed to working with MnDOT, local partners, and Area Transportation Partnerships to ensure funding requirements do not delay progress.
Keeping the Willmar Bypass project moving forward reflects our continued focus on practical, achievable steps that advance the broader vision of a fully connected four-lane Highway 23.
Strengthening the Corridor
With the South Gap nearing completion and the North Gap already accomplished, momentum across the corridor continues. Completing the four-lane extension southwest of Willmar strengthens regional connections between St. Cloud, Willmar, and Marshall while improving safety and supporting economic growth.
The Highway 23 Coalition remains committed to enhancing safety, connectivity, and economic development along the entire corridor. This project represents meaningful progress toward that goal.
