Public Meeting Invite: New Interchange Coming to New London

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) is moving forward with plans to construct a new interchange at the intersection of Highway 23 and Highway 9 in New London, with construction slated for 2028-2029. This project, made possible through $33 million in funding from the Minnesota Legislature’s Corridors of Commerce program, will enhance safety and traffic flow in the region.

Project Overview

The new interchange will feature a bridge over Highway 23 with ramps providing access to and from the highway. Additionally, a roundabout will be constructed at the intersection of Highway 9 and the Highway 23 access road to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion. These improvements are designed to enhance safety for all road users, including motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Community Engagement

MnDOT has been committed to engaging the community throughout the planning process and values public input. A public meeting will be held on Thursday, Dec. 5 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in New London. This open-house style meeting allows attendees to drop in at their convenience to learn more about the project and its next steps.

For those unable to attend, MnDOT will host informal gatherings at local venues:

  • Spicer American Legion: Monday, Dec. 30, 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Goat Ridge Brewing: Thursday, Jan. 9, 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Lake Affect Coffee: Saturday, Jan. 25, 7:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.

Project Development

The interchange project began with a safety assessment in 2017, which identified potential improvements to the intersection. Following community feedback and further evaluations, MnDOT decided to move forward with the interchange option rather than a previously proposed J-turn. Kandiyohi County’s successful funding request through the Corridors of Commerce program made the interchange possible.
